JazzIn 1976, some happy dissidents hatched a hare-brained idea, surely characteristic of the emotional haze of the time, to launch an experimental arts festival in downtown Richmond. Their idea was to try to draw people back into the City, to bring us all together through music and dance. Features from this first festival included the Ezibu Muntu Dancers, the Richmond Chapter of the venerable Clowns of America, and a line of buses filled with grade school art. Without question, the festival was a gamble of immense proportions. What if, after all of the hard work and planning, no one showed up?
