Biz Kid$ are a Whiz at Financial Literacy!

Financial literacy skills are sadly lacking among today’s teens. Learning to make smart money decisions should start early in life.

From the producers of Bill Nye the Science Guy, Biz Kid$ is a fun, fast-paced series where kids teach kids about money and entrepreneurship. Each episode features several young business owners who share their success stories.

Biz Kid$ teaches kids financial literacy in a fun way. Spoofs of movies make this series a hit with both kids and adults. Along the way, kids learn about saving, budging, investing, and giving back to the community.

Being a Biz Kid is all about managing money and building a business…and we don’t mean just learning to balance a checkbook. Kids learn the concepts behind entrepreneurship by formulating business plans and following the principles of marketing.

This series, supported locally by the Virginia Credit Union, is available online at classroomclips.org for registered K-12 educators. To become a registered user, go to the Classroom Clips registration page.

Classroom Clips Needs You

WCVE Education is continuing to develop and acquire educational content for Classroom Clips. You can help us evaluate this content, as well as share your lesson ideas, by using two Classroom Clips features. For each clip, there is a five star rating system located to the right of the media player. Select 1 (Poor) to 5 (Perfect) stars depending on how useful you found the media. Over time, as clips are rated again and again, the average score will better help us and other users determine the instructional value of a clip. Additionally, we want you to share how the clips can be used in a unit or lesson by filling out the comment form found below each clip. What a great way to share the many terrific strategies for using media in the classroom!

Hanover Teacher Wins iPod

During the month of October, WCVE Education sponsored an iPod Touch Giveaway to encourage educators to explore the instructional media site, Classroom Clips. The sweepstakes proved to be a great success as there were 800 entries from school divisions throughout Virginia. The winner of the iPod Touch, who was randomly selected according to the sweepstakes rules, was Amanda Hopkins, a Health and P.E. teacher from Hanover County Public Schools. Amanda says that she will use the iPod to play music for her students during her P.E. classes in order to keep them motivated. Congratulations, Amanda!

Judicial Independence in the New World

Virginia has always been at the heart of our country’s history; the Jamestown settlement laid the foundation for our country’s government, and with that, the beginning of our judicial system as we know it. The court system is ab ever-changing and evolving entity and there are key moments of history when Virginia’s people and its judicial system made their everlasting impressions on the country. JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE IN THE NEW WORLD tells the story of the development of the court system in the early years of our nation’s history. Historians will take us back to Court Days, Pre-Revolution and Post-Revolution periods to explain the rule of law and the basics of the court system we know today.

Although the site is still accessible through eklips.org during the transition, please make a note of the new site for future bookmarks or links. This change is a result of a desire to provide clarity as the site continues to grow into a viable classroom resource to Virginia teachers. Additionally, a new logo will provide a fresh look that can serve as a reminder of the site wherever it may be displayed. New content continues to be added regularly.
